A tie-break rule you can read aloud
Use one numerical question and have each tied team submit one private written guess. Give the same short thinking time to everyone. The closest answer wins, whether the guess is above or below the target. If the distances are equal, use the next unused question. Announce this rule before the main quiz.
- For example, with a target of 144, guesses of 140 and 148 are equally close. Do not choose the lower guess unless that rule was agreed in advance.
- Require the unit named in the question. A guess in hours cannot be compared directly with an answer in minutes.
- Choose whether calculators are allowed. For estimation, use no calculators and a 20-second limit; this is a host-run rule, not an automatic Quiz Champ setting.
- Use paper or a private communication method outside the game for simultaneous guesses. Do not use first-to-buzz speed to resolve an estimation tie.
- Keep at least three questions unused so a second tie has a clear next step.
- Free editable plain-text sheets: save the TXT files, open them in a text or document editor and print. Keep the host key private; print/cut only the selected participant question slip for each team when the round starts. Keep unused questions private. No account is needed for the files.
Five quick numerical tie-breakers
The assumptions are inside each question. Use these when you want a short, easy-to-explain ending.
-
How many seconds are in exactly seven hours?
Reveal answer
25,200 seconds
7 × 60 × 60 = 25,200.
-
How many small squares are in a grid with 12 rows and 12 columns? Count only the smallest squares.
Reveal answer
144 squares
12 × 12 = 144. Larger combined squares are excluded.
-
How many hours are in a 366-day year?
Reveal answer
8,784 hours
366 × 24 = 8,784.
-
What is the total of the integers from 1 through 20, including both endpoints?
Reveal answer
210
Pair 1 with 20, 2 with 19, and so on: 10 pairs of 21.
-
Six dice each have faces numbered 1 through 6. What is the sum of all the numbers on all the faces?
Reveal answer
126
One die totals 21; 6 × 21 = 126.
Five middle-distance estimates
These targets are farther apart, making a repeat tie less likely. Read the full condition before starting the clock.
-
How many minutes are in a 365-day year?
Reveal answer
525,600 minutes
365 × 24 × 60 = 525,600.
-
Eighteen people each shake hands with every other person exactly once. How many handshakes occur?
Reveal answer
153
18 × 17 ÷ 2 = 153.
-
What is the sum of every integer from 1 through 100?
Reveal answer
5,050
100 × 101 ÷ 2 = 5,050.
-
Fourteen teams each play every other team once. How many games are played?
Reveal answer
91 games
14 × 13 ÷ 2 = 91; each pairing creates one game.
-
A triangular display has 12 rows. Row 1 has one light, row 2 has two, and so on. How many lights are there?
Reveal answer
78 lights
12 × 13 ÷ 2 = 78.
Five harder estimates
These work well when the first question still leaves a tie. Read the worked check after all guesses are locked.
-
How many squares of every size are in an 8-by-8 square grid? Count only squares aligned with the grid.
Reveal answer
204 squares
Add 1² + 2² + 3² + 4² + 5² + 6² + 7² + 8² = 204.
-
A three-letter code uses the 26 English letters. Letters may repeat and case does not matter. How many different codes are possible?
Reveal answer
17,576 codes
26 × 26 × 26 = 17,576.
-
A row has ten switches. Each switch can independently be on or off. How many different settings are possible?
Reveal answer
1,024 settings
There are 2 choices for each of 10 switches: 2¹⁰ = 1,024.
-
A domino set has one tile for every unordered pair from 0 through 6, including doubles. How many spots appear across the entire set?
Reveal answer
168 spots
Each value appears in six mixed pairs and twice on its double. The sum is 8 × (0 + 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6) = 168.
-
A large cube is painted on all six outer faces, then cut into a 5-by-5-by-5 array of small cubes. How many small cubes have paint on exactly two faces?
Reveal answer
36 cubes
Only non-corner edge cubes qualify: 12 edges × 3 cubes per edge = 36.
Host answer sheet and dispute check
Copy the chosen question and its answer into your private host notes. Record each team's original guess before revealing the target. Calculate absolute distance: subtract the smaller of the guess and target from the larger. Keep the original question visible so teams can check the unit and assumptions.
- Do not round guesses differently for different teams. If you want whole numbers only, say so before submissions.
- If a team submits two guesses, ask for one final answer before closing the round.
- If a question was read incorrectly, discard it and use a fresh one for all tied teams.
- These targets are calculated from the conditions in the clues. They do not rely on changing population estimates, sporting records, or an undefined average.
- For teams that dislike arithmetic, choose another neutral ending in advance, such as shared winners.
Use the tie-breaker alongside Quiz Champ
Build and host the main category board in Quiz Champ. If it ends tied, run this closest-answer round separately on paper or through your own private-message method, then announce its winner. Quiz Champ's normal clue scoring does not automatically calculate numerical distance or collect a simultaneous tie-break round.
- For a work onboarding session, preview the existing 25-clue onboarding board and customize its people, tools and first-week examples. It is a separate main-game template; these numerical tie-breakers stay in the host-run extra round.
A worked tied-game ending
Two teams finish the main board at 1,200 each. The host has kept the 12-by-12 grid question unused. Both receive the same player slip and write guesses privately: Team A writes 140 squares and Team B writes 148. The target is 144; each is four away, so neither wins yet.
- Use the next unused question: seconds in seven hours. If A guesses 25,000 and B guesses 25,300, the target is 25,200. A is 200 away and B is 100 away, so B wins the extra round.
- Record that numerical result outside Quiz Champ. The app’s normal correct/incorrect scoring does not calculate closeness or compare private simultaneous estimates.
- The main-board score can remain 1,200 each while you announce B as the tie-break winner. Keep the same equal-distance fallback rather than inventing a lower-guess advantage.
